Lili Boulanger (1893-1918)

Biografia

Lili Boulanger (1893-1918)

Biography

Marie-Juliette Olga Boulanger, publicly known as Lili Boulanger, was born in Paris, France, on August 21, 1893. She was a third

generation member of a family of musicians – her grandfather, her father and her sister Nadia were all musical masters at the

Conservatoire National de Paris. A child prodigy, the composer started to demonstrate her musical talents before the age of six and was guided by Nadia in this field.

In 1895 Lili contracted bronchopneumonia, an event that brought her a lifelong fragile health condition. This factor limited her access to regular school studies but, fortunately, did not prevent her later from accomplishing the Conservatoire curriculum em only three years. In 1909 she decided to compete for the Prix de Rome in composition, a prize her father Ernst had won in 1835. She took harmony and counterpoint classes with Georges Caussade and finally triumphed in entering the Conservatoire in 1912. There she became a composition pupil of Paul Vidal.

Lili was the first woman to achieve the Prix de Rome, in 1913, in the composition category with the cantata Paul et Hélène. This gender controversy and also Lili’s young age as a composer earned her fame and publicity. Lili was offered a contract with the Ricordi editing house which permitted her to extend the stay at the Vila Medici, in Roma, for almost one year.

The outbreak of World War I, in 1914, caused Lili the interruption of her research in Italy but did not impact her activities and studies as composer, conductor and soloist. Meanwhile she founded and organized the French-American Committee at the Conservatoire in Paris that was dedicated to provide assistance to musicians enlisted in the military and their families during wartime.

In 1916 Lili returned to Roma for a short period but her impaired health demanded her to go through a major surgery. Lili, a tranquil mind and a radiant catholic, kept working until the final days of her brief life ended in May 15, 1918. When composing her last piece, Pie Jésu, Lili dictated note by note of the work to her sister Nadia Boulanger.

Compositions

Despite her premature death, Lili Boulanger composed more than fifty works (and some of them with great dimensions). Deriving from her never-ending catholic faith she composed several pieces for religious choirs. In these works, the counterpoint is magnificently elaborated and the expressive vitality shows the composer’s strict personality and character (contrasting with her fragile physical constitution). It is also worth-mentioning Lili’s compositions derived from psalms, such as the ‘Du fond de l’abime' (Psalm CXXX),

The canto lirico is another front explored by the composer, who appreciated Maurice Maeterlinck’s and Francis Jammes’ verses. Maurice provided the text (lyrics) for Lili’s unfinished opera ‘La princesse Maleine', composed under requesting order by Ricordi. The tragical journey of the heroine ‘Maline’ apparently inspired Lili as a result of her identification with this Maeterlinck’s character.

The influence made by other contemporary composers, such as Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, can be particularly felt in Lili’s piano pieces. The diatonic intervals (‘fourth’), the usage of modal melodies and the pedal notes suggest ambiences and outdoor scenery in her pieces (replicating a core feature of the impressionism movement). ‘D’un jardin clair', ‘D’un vieux jardin’ andCortège’ address the colorful gardens drawn in Fauré’s Suite Dolly, in Ravel’s ‘Ma mère L’Oye’ and Debussy’s Petite Suite. Nevertheless they all keep the intimate and devotee language of Lili Boulanger. Prayers and lyricism can be heard and identified in all her compositions.
