Between 1966 and 67 she studied Composition and Computer Music at IRCAM, where she met and worked with Tristan Murail.

Since 2007, Misato teaches at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo. She acted as a guest teacher at the Darmstadt Summer Courses in 2008, as well as at Royaumont, Takefu and Amsterdam.

Her oeuvres have been presented at important festivals - such as Donausesching and Mana - and performed and / or recorded by acknowledged instrumental groups, among which stand out the Baden-Baden SWR Symphonic Orchestra, the France Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Deutsche Sinfonieorchester of SFB-Radio Berlin, Intertemporal Encounter, Modern Modern, Klangforum Wien, Ictus Ensemble, New Set, 2e2m, and Court-circuit.

Between 2011 and 2013, she was a composer resident at the Besançon International Music Festival. In 2015, she worked on creating a percussion quartet, Quark II, for Thierry Miroglio and his Contemporary Orchestral  Ensemble, under the direction of Daniel Kawka.

Misato also composed the string quartet Brains, presented in 2017 at the Présences Festival, and a music for solo voice and ensemble, Têtes, performed in the Darmstadt Festival in 2017 by ensemble Musikfabrik.

The composer also writes about music and culture in journals like Yomiuri Shimbun and Keizai Shimbun, in Japan. She works in her country as well as in Europe, participating in musical events.

Her compositions are edited by Breitkopf & Härtel.

Compositions:

Misato Mochizuki's oeuvres unite aspects of the Western and Asian traditions. Her composition presents formal and style freedom, influenced by spectral music and employing oriental modes.

The composer is also interested in other scientific areas, such as Biology and Genetics. The pieces Homeobox (2001) and Chimera (2000) demonstrate this characteristic of Misato. On the latter, the IRCAM (2019) newspaper notes:

Chimera evokes a living organism endowed with a heartbeat whose cells live, reproduce, transform and move like a biological body. It is a perpetual movement that develops according to metonymic rules, amplification of a detail, transformations of the attacks of figures by the appearance of noises ...

The human being and the Cosmos are approached in works like Noos (2001) and Omega Project (2002). These are compositions inspired by the works of Teilhard de Chardin.

The photograph is another reference for the composer’s creation. La chambre Claire (1998) and Camera Lucida (1999) are examples of this strand accessed by Misato. Her work at IRCAM is reflected in Si bleu, si calme, from 1997, in which she employs sound mutation and cross-synthesis techniques.

In her repertoire it is also possible to detect pieces for silent films, as for the films of Kenji Mizoguchi and Man Ray, and an opera bufa, The big bakery robbery, based on books of Haruki Murakami.
