Biografia:
Lucrecia Roces Kasilag nasceu em 31 de agosto de 1918, em San Fernando, Filipinas. Depois de seu nascimento, a família Kasilag decidiu mudar-se para Albay, e depois para Manila [1].
Sua primeira influência musical foi sua mãe, Asuncion Roces, que era professora de música. Lucrecia iniciou seus estudos musicais na infância, quando aprendeu a tocar violão. A artista formou-se bacharel em artes na Universidade das Filipinas para Mulheres e, em seguida, estudou piano com os professores Concha Cuervo e Pura Lacson Villanueva. Em 1939, Kasilag recebeu o diploma de professora de música na Escola de Música St. Scholastica [1].
Kasilag começou a compor durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial e realizou um importante e pioneiro trabalho ao combinar recursos de instrumentos orientais e ocidentais em suas composições. A artista criou mais de 250 obras que variam de música folclórica, peças para instrumento solo, para música de câmara e orquestra [1].
Em 1945, Kasilag interpretou suas próprias composições em um concerto na Universidade das Filipinas para Mulheres. De 1946 a 1947, ela lecionou no Conservatório de Música da Universidade das Filipinas e trabalhou como secretária na Universidade das Filipinas para Mulheres [2].
Em 1949, Kasilag graduou-se bacharel em música na Universidade das Filipinas para Mulheres, e em seguida, concluiu mestrado na Escola de Música Eastman em Rochester, EUA. Em 1953 retornou às Filipinas, onde foi nomeada diretora do Colégio de Música e Artes da Universidade das Filipinas para Mulheres [2].
Concluídos os estudos, Kasilag iniciou uma turnê internacional como concertista de piano. Infelizmente, a artista teve que abdicar de sua carreira performática, devido a uma doença congênita em sua mão [2].
A artista realizou pesquisa pioneira em cultura étnica e ganhou reconhecimento mundial como diretora da Companhia de Dança Bayanihan, nas Filipinas [1]. Ela também fundou o Centro de Arte Folclórica para pesquisa e apresentações teatrais, foi presidente do Centro Cultural das Filipinas e membra titular da Sociedade Filipina para Educação Musical [2].
Lucrecia Kasilag recebeu diversos prêmios e honras, tais como: honorário doutorado em música pela Universidade Centro Escolas (1975), honorário doutorado em direito pela Universidade das Filipinas para Mulheres (1980), honorário doutorado em Artes pela Universidade St. John em Nova Yorque (1981), e o prêmio de Artista Nacional nas Filipinas (1989) [2].
A artista realizou composições até o ano de seu falecimento, aos 90 anos, em 16 de agosto de 2008 [2].

Biography:
Lucrecia Roces Kasilag was born on August 31, 1918 in San Fernando, Philippines. After her birth, the Kasilag family decided to move to Albay, and then to Manila [1].
Her first musical influence was her mother, Asuncion Roces, a music teacher. As a child, Lucrecia learned how to play the guitar. The artist received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU). After that, she studied piano with Concha Cuervo and Pura Lacson Villanueva. In 1939, Kasilag obtained a Music Teacher’s degree from St. Scholastica’s College of Music. [1].
Kasilag started composing during the World War II and did significant and pioneering work in combining the resources of occidental and oriental instruments in East and West compositions. She created over 250 compositions that range from folk songs arrangements, solo instruments pieces, chamber and orchestral works [1].
In 1945, Kasilag performed her own composition in a concert at the Philippine Women’s University. From 1946 to 1947, she taught at the University of the Philippines’ Conservatory of Music and worked as secretary-registrar at the Philippine Women’s University [2].
In 1949, Kasilag completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the Philippine Women’s University, and then a Master’s degree at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. In 1953, she returned to the Philippines, where she was appointed Dean of the Philippines Women’s University College of Music and Fine Arts [2].
After completing her studies, Kasilag made an international tour as a concert pianist. Unfortunately, she had to give up a performing career due to a congenital weakness in her hand [2].
The artist did pioneering research in ethnic culture and gained worldwide recognition as the Director of the Bayanihan Philippines Dance Company. [1] She also founded the Bayanihan Folks Arts Center for research and theatrical presentations, was a former president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Chairperson of the Philippine Society for Music Education [2].
Lucrecia Kasilag achieved many honors and awards, such as: honorary Doctor of Music from Centro Escolas University (1975), honorary Doctor of Laws from the Philippine Women’s University (1980), honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from St. John’s University in New York (1981), and the National Artist award in the Philippines (1989) [2].
The artist composed up to the year before she died, at the age of 90, on August 16, 2008 [2].
